Essential oil protocols for a child with autism

This is a continuation of a series of blog posts about essential oils and children with autism.

Each child with autism needs different oils depending on their symptoms and what is going on for them.

Below is a recommended essential oil protocol developed by my colleague, Jaime, for a two year old non-verbal child with regression autism and sensory processing issues.
  • AromaTouch technique for the nerves and to help the body heal and detox. Once or twice a week. You can skip the Deep Blue and peppermint if you are doing it before bed because they are cool feeling.
  • Frankincense for the brain, cell repair and inflammation. You can rub behind the ears for brain stem and up and down the spine, as well as on the feet and belly, if there are gut issues.
  • Oregano, melaleuca and lemon on the feet. Lemon and melaleuca on the stomach and liver. These are all antimicrobial.
  • On Guard on the feet to combat pathogens and boost the immune system.
  • Lavender and Balance on the feet and / or spine for calming the nervous system and helping them feel more grounded. These oils can also be diffused.
  • Note, frankincense, oregano, melaleuca, lemon, On Guard, lavender, as well as many of the AromaTouch technique oils are all part of the Family Physician's Kit.
  • Jaime also recommends the supplement, GABA Balance, for non-verbal children.
Incidentally, these are the same oils that I often use on my six year old son who has a primary immunodeficiency, and I am finding that they are really helping him, bringing him ease and wellness in his body and helping him to fight infections.

Here is a naturopath's recommendation for autism:
  • DDR Prime 3 times a day on roof of mouth and down the spine along with frankincense, Peaceful Child, In Tune, and Immortelle in the same manner.
  • She recommends the gut dysbiosis diet, a heavy metal cleanse with Cilantro, GX Assist, & PB assist as well as the A-Z childrens vitamins and IQMega supplement.
  • She recommends using frankincense for the brain for inflammatory issues of the brain.
Other recommendations for children with autism

Protocol 1 - Jaime's daily favourites for her 5 year old
  • Balance – I use this oil before we do our homeschooling each day for focus and attention. Rubbing it up the neck and the base of the skull and a dab on the third eye point. We also use Balance before bed at night. Detoxifying, promotes courage and self-esteem.
  • Lavender – this oil is recommended for almost every topic I covered in the class I taught. It is great for focus and attention, anxiety, sleep issues, inflammation, meltdowns and rashes. We use it everynight either on the bottoms of the feet, in our bath, backrub or on the base of the skull and neck. I also use it before going out in public since my daughter still can become overwhelmed and upset in big crowds. Recently I started using it for her before her social group class and immediately she was paying better attention, more calm and actually playing with the other kids.
  • Frankincense - this oil is top of my list for anyone. Stimulates limbic system of the brain. I use this oil nightly on my daughters feet for calming, focus and inflammation in her body. I take it internally daily. It is analgesic, anti-depressant, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, astringent, diuretic and sedative. Frankincense oil supports the healthy production of white blood cells and boosts the immune system.
  • Vetiver – focus, calm, anxiety, depression, insomnia, skin care and healing, nervousness, stress,. Diffusing vetiver essential oil may help relieve stress and to recover from emotional shock and trauma. A natural tranquilizer, can help induce a restful sleep. It is also helpful for a congested liver and pancreas. It is very grounding and can be used at night if you have a child who walks in their sleep or seems very fidgety while sleeping. Pairs well with lavender and clary sage.
  • In Tune – Helps restore focus and increase ability to stay on task, promotes clarity of thought and increases alertness and centering thought processes.
    Protocol 2 - CM's story
    • Vetiver (calming, grounding, a nervous system sedative)
    • patchouli (grounding, a digester of toxins in the body)

    • lavender (a universal oil to balance the body and work where there is a need; anxiety, emotional balance)
    • a drop behind each ear a couple times a day, but definitely in the morning. Also, Serenity on the bottom of the feet and on the heart.
    • Add InTune, if necessary.
