Here is some great information about how to use essential oils to help your children with common illnesses / ailments.

Some things to keep in mind when using essential oils on your children:
  • When treating young children, dilute with 1 drop of essential oil in a 1 tsp of carrier oil such as fractionated coconut oil or any vegetable based oil. For infants, dilute 1 drop of essential oil in 1 tablespoon of carrier oil.
  • Applying and massaging into little feet is an excellent application method for kids.
  • Only use Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade oils on your sensitive children's skin.
  • If an essential oil accidentally gets into a child (or adult's) eye, dilute with a vegetable oil, such as olive oil or fractionated coconut oil, NOT with water. Review other safety information here.
  • Read this for information about babies and essential oils.
  • After 14 years, the child can be treated with aromatherapy as you would treat an adult.
If you are new to using essential oils, I highly recommend doTERRA's intro kit (lavender, lemon and peppermint), or the Family Physician Kit, which comes with 10 essential oils (Breathe, Deep Blue, DigestZen, frankincense, lavender, lemon, melaleuca, On Guard, oregano and peppermint).

Anxiety/fear – Lavender and Serenity are great oils to help calm down children with.  Children often experience anxiety and fear as they continue to learn about the world around them.  To help ease some of these symptoms which could include screaming, crying, shying away, etc. you should apply these oils to bottoms of the child’s feet.  The feet have the largest pores in the body and so the oils will get into the bloodstream the quickest from that point (often within 30 seconds).

Congestion:  Eucalyptus, Peppermint and Breathe –  Diffuse 4 drops (of one) in a diffuser, or apply on upper spine or lungs.  Oils help congestion when inhaled, so diffusion is great.  DO NOT put oils directly on nose or forehead without a carrier oil.  Applying directly on skin can sting and cause irritation to the eyes.

    1. Hi,
Which age group refer to these? From 3 to 14 years? And also the baby topic, from 3 month to 3 or 4 years? Thanks a lot! Have a nice day!

    2. I'd say baby is from birth to 2-3 years, and children is from 3 years to 14 years. A premature baby should not be treated with essential oils.

    3. hi there,
a few of these protocols mention using one drop of a particular oil but don't mention using with a carrier oil and some mention to specifically dilute in a carrier oil. at the very top it gives specifics about diluting for infants and young children. so, is it important to dilute oils each time or infants and children. my 2 year old is under the weather with runny nose/congestion and just feeling yucky. does diluting have to do with the kind of oil or where it is going to be applied on the body? i guess i'm wondering why some specify using a carrier oil and why some don't even though it makes the "diluting" general statement at the top of the article.

    4. Hi Jaime: Good question. For a 2 year old, I would recommend diluting all of the essential oils in a carrier oil.
